Guy MacLeod began his career in 1999 as a corporate lawyer at one of South Africa's large firms. In early 2001, just as Hollywood was discovering South Africa, Guy saw an opportunity to take his experience in commercial law and combine it with his love of film and music to develop an entertainment law practice offering affordable legal services to local film production companies and producers. The government rebates introduced in 2004 further fuelled the growing South African film industry and by 2006 Guy was focusing exclusively on film and television law.
Guy's entertainment law practice, which now represents both local and foreign producers, has developed into one of the leading entertainment law firms in South Africa. In addition to general commercial and media work, Guy and his team concentrate on the development, production and exploitation of feature films, with a particular focus on the legal and financial aspects of international co-production. A recent push by the firm into the music world has yielded Guy's involvement in "the Mashlab", a unique collaboration of international and local artists giving rise to master royalty deals that span the globe. He remains the only South African entertainment lawyer with credits in major Hollywood films and has tasted Oscar success with 'Tsotsi', 'Invictus' and 'Life is Beautiful'.
His clients range from Warner Brothers and Starz Entertainment in Los Angeles to Kalahari Pictures (Pty) Ltd and Triggerfish Animation Studios in Cape Town. He is highly regarded both locally and internationally as South Africa's leading entertainment lawyer. He is also a guest lecturer of various institutions and works pro bono for up and coming SA producers.
Outside of the office, Guy is married with two children. Any spare time is, weather permitting, spent on the beach or pursuing his hobbies of movies and music.
